What are Nationals?

Nationals are two annual Rock'n'Roll Dance Competitions.  A Junior Nationals (aged under 18) is held at Easter every year, and a Senior Nationals (aged 18 and over) is held at Labour Weekend every year.  The information listed here has been extracted from Rule Book A.  The rule book is the official source of information about the competition process.   For clubs wishing to host a Nationals please click here 

Junior Nationals

Competitors age is taken as at 30th April of the year of the competition.  The following competition grades exist:

Grade	Age Bracket	Description
Junior	5 - 9
Intermediate	10 - 13
Seniors	14 - 17
Restricted	5 - 17	One partner in a couple must not take the weight of the other partner while that person is not in contact with the floor.
Same Sex	5 - 17
Top Club	5 - 17	Three couples dancing to a known song
Novelty	5 - 17	Entertaining skit performed to music
Junior Triples	5 - 12	One boy dancing with two ladies
Intermediate Triples	13 - 17	One boy dancing with two ladies
Cheerleaders	5 - 17	Performers doing chants and cheers without accompanying music

Senior Nationals

Competitors age is taken as at 31st October of the year of the competition.  The following competition grades exist:

Grade	Age Bracket	Description
Novice	18+	Have never competed at a National Competition in any event apart from Novelty
Open	18+
Platinum	30+
Golden	40+
Masters	50+
Diamond	60+
Open Restricted	18+	One partner in a couple must not take the weight of the other partner while that person is not in contact with the floor.
Senior Restricted	40+	As Open Restricted
Top Club	18+	Three couples dancing to a known song
Novelty	18+	Entertaining skit performed to music
Open Triples	18+	One man dancing with two ladies
Senior Triples	35+	One man dancing with two ladies
